Swift launches consumer cross-border payments scheme with 40+ banks
Swift, working with more than 40 banks, launched the Swift Payments Scheme — a set of enforceable rules intended to make cross-border consumer-originated payments faster, more predictable and more transparent. More than 70 financial institutions committed to implementing the scheme in 2026 across corridors including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Germany, India, Pakistan, Spain, Thailand, the UK and the US.
As the dominant global messaging network for cross-border payments, a Swift-led rulebook for consumer remittance corridors has outsized influence on settlement speed and transparency standards banks apply to retail cross-border transfers, including several major remittance-receiving markets.
