Cross-border e-commerce lets merchants, SMEs, creators and brands sell internationally without a local presence — characterised by high volumes, marketplace-led settlement and real-time seller payouts.
Cross-border e-commerce has transformed global trade by allowing merchants, SMEs, creators, brands and individuals to sell products and services internationally without maintaining a physical presence in destination markets. Unlike traditional trade payments involving large corporate transactions, marketplace and e-commerce payments are characterised by high transaction volumes, smaller average ticket sizes, marketplace-led settlement models and real-time seller payouts.

Cards no longer dominate global commerce — in many markets, local payment methods account for over 60% of online payments: UPI (India), Alipay/WeChat Pay (China), PIX (Brazil), iDEAL (Netherlands), BLIK (Poland).
Marketplace payments face increasing scrutiny across AML (seller verification, beneficial ownership, KYB), tax reporting (DAC7 in Europe, IRS reporting in the USA) and consumer protection (refunds, chargebacks). Key risk typologies include fake merchants, shell companies, trade-based money laundering and invoice manipulation.
The industry is expected to evolve from simple merchant settlements into a fully integrated ecosystem spanning marketplace, payments, banking, lending, FX, treasury, logistics, insurance, tax services and working capital. After incorporating merchant acquiring, embedded finance, marketplace lending and social commerce, marketplace and seller payouts is projected to exceed USD 1.5 trillion annually by 2030 — one of the largest and most commercially relevant segments in the entire cross-border payments landscape.
